Recognizing Abuse, Neglect, and Financial Exploitation

Abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of adults are becoming more common. Unfortunately, the indicators are not always easy to recognize, and the adult may not inform anyone of the situation due to fear, isolation, or shame. Listed below are potential red flags that adults may exhibit when being abused, neglected, or financially exploited.

Abuse

  • Unexplained injuries, bruises, cuts, or sores
  • Appears sad or withdrawn
  • Avoids eye contact or conversation
  • Appears intimidated or coerced by caregiver, family member, or others
  • Increased fear or anxiety

Neglect

  • Dehydration or unusual weight loss
  • Improper hygiene (poor grooming, soiled clothing, disheveled appearance)
  • Appears confused or forgetful
  • Missing daily living aids (glasses, walker, or medication)
  • Inadequate food, shelter, or clothing

Financial exploitation

  • Third party with unusual interest in adult’s finances
  • Unusual or sudden changes in spending patterns
  • Unpaid bills, NSFs, etc.
  • Fraudulent signatures on financial documents
  • Changes in attitude towards money
  • Unexpected changes in beneficiary designations or legal documents
