Home Repair Scams

How they work

Someone stating they are a home repair professional knocks on your door or calls. The scammer says they can fix your leaky roof, install new windows, or pave your driveway, pressuring you to act quickly, pay with cash, or may offer financing. Often, home repair scammers contact desperate homeowners after a major natural disaster.

But what happens next? The scammer steals your money, never makes repairs, or does sub-par work, making things worse. If you sign a finance agreement for the repairs, the terms are often unfair and may require you to use your home as collateral.

What you can do

  • Do your research. Before allowing work to begin ask for references, licenses, and insurance. Get at least three written estimates. Don’t allow work to start until you have a signed contract. Never pay by cash or wire transfer.
  • Share this information with a friend. You may not have seen this scam, but chances are you know someone who has.
