ATM Safety Tips

Hand using ATM machine

We’ve compiled our top nine tips for your personal safety and account security when using ATMs.

1. Protect your personal PIN

Keep your Personal Identification Number (PIN) a secret and never share it. Commit your PIN to memory and don’t write it down anywhere, especially on your card.

2. Be aware of your surroundings

As you approach the ATM, be aware of your surroundings. If you observe someone in the area who appears suspicious, do not use the ATM at that time. If it is dark outside, park close to the ATM in a well-lit area. Do not use the ATM if the lights are not working or if the machine is blocked by shrubbery.

3. Have your card ready

Wait until others have finished their transactions and have your card ready in your hand before approaching the machine.

4. Inspect the ATM before using

Visually inspect the ATM for foreign objects or fraudster skimming devices. Possible indicators include sticky residue or adhesive, scratches, damaged or crooked pieces, loose or extra attachments on the card slot, or noticeable resistance when pressing the keypad.

5. Shield your PIN entry

Be careful that no one can see you enter your PIN. Stand close to the ATM and use your other hand or body to shield the screen when entering your PIN.

6. Take your receipt

Remember to retrieve your receipt, card, and money before leaving the ATM.

7. Do not display your money at the ATM

Do not visually display any money you receive from the ATM. Wait until you leave the ATM or return to your car with the doors locked to count your money.

8. Lock your car

If you use the drive-up ATM, keep your passenger windows rolled up, your doors locked and your car running while you conduct your transaction. If you leave your car and walk to the ATM, lock your car.

9. Report a stuck, lost, or stolen card

If your card is retained by an ATM, look for foreign materials around the card insertion slot and immediately notify your local branch or call the 800 number located on the front of the ATM. Immediately report a lost or stolen card to your local branch or Member Services Support at (888) 732-8562.
