Tax Preparation

Return preparation for the 2013 tax season is now available to eligible members at all branch locations. If eligible, SECU tax preparers can complete and electronically file your federal and North Carolina returns! We will first determine if you are eligible for free tax preparation through the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. If not eligible for VITA, we may be able to assist you through SECU’s Low-Cost Tax Preparation1 program for a flat fee of $75. Participating in either program will give you the opportunity to save money on tax preparation fees!

How does the process work?
  1. Compile all of your tax documents and take them to your local branch.
  2. An SECU tax preparer will review the information with you to determine which program works for your income and if further information is needed.
  3. You are free to go! Your completed return will be available for your review and signature within 5 business days.
Getting Started
To expedite your visit, review the "Getting Started Kit" below prior to coming to the branch. It has information regarding eligibility, items to bring with you, and several documents that must be completed before you can meet with a preparer. If possible, print and complete the forms and bring them with you. Otherwise, this packet will be available for pick up at your local branch.



What you will need to bring:
  • Picture ID
  • Social Security cards for yourself and all other individuals on your return (spouse and all dependents)
  • Your 2012 tax return
  • All income documents including W-2s, 1099s and other tax documents
  • Documentation of higher education expenses including tuition paid and student loan interest paid
  • Daycare expenses and the daycare provider’s name, address and tax ID number
  • Documentation or a detailed listing to support itemized deductions if applicable. These items may include:
    • Mortgage loan interest paid
    • Charitable contributions
    • Property taxes paid (home and auto)
    • Medical expenses
*Note, in lieu of bringing individual receipts and statements, you can complete and provide the Itemized Deduction Detail Sheet.



Which program are you eligible for?

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Household income is $52,000 or less

VITA is an IRS-sponsored program available to help
taxpayers with a household income of $52,000 or
less prepare and electronically file basic tax
returns. Certified SECU employees can prepare
and electronically file your basic tax return for free!



Low-Cost Tax Preparation
Household income is more than $52,000

Low-Cost Tax Preparation service is a low-cost
alternative for basic tax preparation available
for members whose income exceeds the VITA
threshold of $52,000. SECU tax preparers can
prepare and electronically file your basic tax
return for the low cost of $75.

For members who prefer to complete their own taxes, SECU has partnered with Intuit® to offer TurboTax®. TurboTax puts the power in your hands to keep more of your hard earned money, with the peace-of-mind of knowing you have experts in your corner every step of the way! Plus, SECU members can save on TurboTax federal products.
