Dealing With Fraud

It is essential to know what steps must be taken in the event you fall victim to fraud. The Credit Union provides both instructions, as well as additional tips, for handling various fraud situations.

Email Fraud

  • Do NOT click any links in or reply to the email
  • Do NOT enter any requested information
  • Contact the SECU Call Center immediately at (888) 732-8562 or (919) 857-2150
  • Forward the email to notifyus@ncsecu.org

Identity Theft

  • Immediately contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a "fraud alert." One bureau will report the information to the other three and a credit report will be mailed to the victim for review.
  • Contact SECU, and any other financial institutions with which accounts are held, and immediately close all affected accounts.
  • Contact local law enforcement authorities and file a report.
  • Check with the local post office for unauthorized change-of-address requests.

Additional Tips

  • Never include financial information in an email, as email is not secure
  • Review all financial statements regularly for fraudulent activity
  • Visit LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com for information regarding current, consumer-targeted frauds.
