SECU wants to help you secure financial well-being for you and your family. Planning is the key to success. Saving,
borrowing, investing, retirement planning - everyone needs strategies to reach these goals. As lives change - marriage,
children, college, retirement - financial needs and goals change also. Most people want help and guidance from a
provider they trust - and SECU can be that provider for you. SECU would like to talk with you about your financial
objectives to help you achieve your dreams.
What can you do now to get started? Here are the basics you should know to make sure your long-range
plans are protected from emergencies and unforeseen events. SECU believes you should address the following:
Health Insurance
Protects you and your family against catastrophic medical costs due to injury or illness. If you are not
already covered, talk to one of our insurance agents. Of the numerous insurance products available in
the marketplace today, health insurance is one of
the basics needed by most everyone.
Life Insurance
Provides the cash to replace lost income, to pay debts and to provide for the future financial security of
your dependents you leave behind. We can help you determine the right amount of insurance to meet your needs.
State Employees' Credit Union offers members term life
insurance that is simple, affordable and provides more coverage for the premium dollar.
Line of Credit
Provides for those sudden large expenses that may exceed your emergency savings fund. The credit union offers
home equity loans,
open-end personal loans and
credit cards with pre-approved credit limits.
Retirement Savings
Provides income for your future when you retire. This should be everyone’s most important long range goal. We
can help you evaluate your current plan. State Employees' Credit Union offers an
Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to assist you in
retirement planning. Three types of IRAs are available: Roth, Traditional and
Simplified Employee Pension (SEP). If you are interested in planning your retirement or simply wanting to
save for the future, login to Member Access and complete a Retirement Assessment through our Financial
Advisory Services found under Services.
Investments
We want to help you build your nest egg. Remember, wealth is created by saving, not spending. Ask to speak
with an Investment Representative about mutual fund investing.
For do-it-yourself members, the Credit Union has also partnered with ShareBuilder
to provide members with a low cost alternative for buying stocks and other investments. Securities are not
NCUA insured, are not guaranteed by or obligations of any credit union, and may lose value including the
principal amount invested.
For members that want to take advantage of the potential higher returns afforded by the stock market but do not
want to risk losing their invested funds, the Credit Union offers the
Bridge Account.
Estate Planning
Allows you to plan for difficult decisions you may face in the future. SECU recommends that most everyone have a
will, especially if you are married and/or have dependents. A will allows you to distribute your assets at death,
create a trust for your minor children and appoint guardians for your children. A health care
power of attorney
and a durable or springing power of attorney appoint decision makers for you if you become incapacitated. A living
will allows you to specify what type of medical care you receive when there is no hope of your recovery.
Have you thought about what kind of health care you would want at the end of life? Would you want your loved ones
agonizing over making life and death decisions for you during a time of emotional turmoil? By preparing an
Advance Health Care Directive, you can make your own
legally binding decisions.
